Search GIPHY and drop GIFs into your Divi 5 pages with the free GIF module.

What support covers. SU support helps with problems in SU plugins only. For Divi itself (the theme, the builder, Divi updates) or for design help, please contact Elegant Themes support.

What it does and who it's for

Divi GIF adds a GIF module to the Divi 5 Visual Builder. Search GIPHY (or browse Trending now) right in the module settings, click a GIF, and it's on your page. You choose size (small, medium, large, original or full width), alignment and alt text. GIFs are lazy-loaded, and visitors who prefer less motion see a still first frame.

It's for bloggers, marketers, community sites and anyone who wants fun, fast-loading GIFs in Divi 5.

Requirements

  • WordPress 6.4 or newer, PHP 7.4 or newer
  • Divi 5 (Divi 4 isn't supported)
  • A free GIPHY API key (steps below)

Install the plugin

  1. Go to the Divi GIF product page and click Download free to get the plugin zip. Keep it zipped.
  2. In WordPress, go to Plugins > Add New and click Upload Plugin at the top.
  3. Click Choose File, pick the zip, then click Install Now.
  4. Already have an older version installed? WordPress shows a comparison. Click Replace current with uploaded.
  5. Click Activate Plugin. A SUWEB menu appears in the left sidebar (all SU Web plugins share it).

Licensing and updates

Divi GIF is free and needs no license key, so you don't need to enter anything under SUWEB > My licenses. Divi GIF itself sends nothing to SU Web Agency.

To update, download the latest zip with Download free on the product page and upload it (Install step 4, Replace current with uploaded).

Divi GIF is free and doesn't come with priority support. If you report a problem, we look into it and fix it in an update.

Add your free GIPHY key

Go to SUWEB > Divi GIF. Until you add a key you'll see "No key yet. GIF search stays off until you add one."

  1. Sign up free at GIPHY Developers (Get a free GIPHY key).
  2. Click Create an App.
  3. Choose API (not SDK).
  4. Give it a name, for example your site name.
  5. Copy the API key, paste it into Your GIPHY key, and click Save settings. You'll see Saved. Your GIPHY key works.

Your key stays on your site and is only sent to GIPHY.

Settings (SUWEB > Divi GIF)

Under Module & visitors:

  • Enable the GIF module (on by default). When off, the module is hidden from the builder and GIF modules already on your pages show nothing. Turn it back on and they return as they were.
  • Respect reduced motion (on by default). Visitors whose device asks for less motion see a still first frame, at the same size, so your layout doesn't move.
  • Lazy-load GIFs (on by default). Keeps pages fast.

Other settings:

  • Content rating: the highest rating search results may have (G: suitable for everyone, PG, PG-13, R). G is the default.
  • Where GIFs live: Save a copy to the Media Library (recommended) or Load GIFs from GIPHY.
  • Show a small "via GIPHY" link under each GIF on your pages (optional).

Add a GIF to a page

  1. Open a page or post in the Divi 5 Visual Builder.
  2. Add a module and choose GIF.
  3. Type a word in the Search GIPHY box (or pick from Trending now) and click a GIF.
  4. Set the size, alignment and alt text, then save the page. Use Change GIF to pick a different one.

Privacy

No tracking, nothing sent to SU Web Agency. Searches go from your site straight to GIPHY, only when someone searches in the builder. Visitors only contact GIPHY if you choose Load GIFs from GIPHY.

Hosting firewall (WAF) and security plugins

The GIF search box in the Visual Builder talks to your own site through WordPress's standard web address for apps (the REST API, under /wp-json/), and your site then asks GIPHY. If your host's firewall blocks those requests, the search fails or shows nothing.

Signs of a block: an action spins and then fails, or you (or your Grok Bot) see a plain page saying 403 or Forbidden Access instead of a normal WordPress message. This page comes from your host's firewall, not from the plugin.

Step 1: Add a firewall exception for /wp-json/. In your hosting control panel, open the firewall / WAF settings (or ask your host's support) and add an exception for the path /wp-json/. Just the path is enough; you don't need the full web address. This is the fix that worked on suweb.ai itself. It doesn't open your site up: every request still has to log in properly.

Step 2 (alternative): an IP allow rule. If your host can't do path exceptions, ask them to allow the IP address the requests come from. Note that some IP addresses change over time, so the path exception is the better long-term fix.

Step 3: Delete requests. Some hosts block "delete" type requests altogether. Divi GIF's search and settings don't rely on delete requests, so this shouldn't affect it. (Your other SU Web plugins, through Divi Bot Bridge, can send deletes as a normal request marked ?_method=DELETE to get past this kind of block.)

Step 4: Check your security plugins. Security plugins can block the same requests. For example, in CleanTalk look at the anti-crawler, anti-flood and firewall options: leave them off, or add your own site / the request to their allowlist. Do the same check in any other firewall or security plugin you use.

Step 5: Retest.

  1. Open a page in the Divi 5 Visual Builder, add a GIF module and search for a word like "celebrate".
  2. If GIFs appear and one saves to your Media Library, you're fixed.
  3. If you see an error such as "Request failed (403)", recheck Steps 1 to 4.

If it still fails, clear any site or host cache, wait a few minutes for firewall changes to take effect, and try again. Still stuck? Contact suweb.ai/support and tell us what you saw and when. See also suweb.ai/docs/hosting-and-firewall.

Troubleshooting

  • Search is empty or won't run: add your GIPHY key under SUWEB > Divi GIF (use Open Divi GIF settings from the module).
  • "Divi 5 is not active on this site. The GIF module only works in Divi 5.": Divi 4 isn't supported.
  • "Could not reach GIPHY. Try again in a moment.": GIPHY or your connection is briefly unavailable; some hosts also block outgoing connections, so ask your host to allow api.giphy.com and media.giphy.com.
  • "Could not save to the Media Library…": check your uploads folder permissions with your host, or switch Where GIFs live to Load GIFs from GIPHY.
  • "That file is too large or is not a GIF.": pick a different GIF.
  • "No GIFs found.": try a different word, or your Content rating may be filtering results.
  • GIF modules disappeared from my pages: check Enable the GIF module is on.
  • Uninstalling: plugin settings are deleted; GIFs saved to your Media Library stay.
