The great debate
How do you pronounce “GIF”?
Hard G people and soft G people have been at it since 1987. We're not here to take sides. We're just going to mention, very quietly, that Steve Wilhite, who invented the format, said it's pronounced “JIF.”
You can keep saying “GIF.” The module works the same either way. The inventor is rolling over in his grave, so we hope your conscience can handle that.
Official pronunciation guide
When to use a GIF
Perfectly timed GIFs, a field guide
A good GIF is like a good joke at a dinner party: right moment, right room, once. Here's where they land.
Thank-you pages
Someone just bought your thing. Maui’s “You’re welcome” is technically backwards. That’s why it works.
404 pages
Confused Travolta, looking for the page that isn’t there. Same, buddy. Then point them home.
“Coming soon” pages
Nothing to show yet? Mr. Bean waiting says “soon” with more honesty than any countdown timer.
Pricing pages
One Kramer “mind blown” next to your best plan. One. Not one per plan.
Team pages
A high five next to “Meet the team” makes your people feel like people. Not stock-photo handshakes.
Onboarding steps
Step 3 done? A tiny George Costanza happy dance keeps people clicking to step 4.

When not to
Read the room (and the GIF)
Divi GIF makes adding a GIF easy. It does not make every GIF a good idea. Some places are a hard no.
- Legal pages. Nobody wants a dancing cat next to “limitation of liability.”
- Your accountant's website. “Your taxes, but make it fun!” is not the reassurance they're after.
- Error messages about money. “Payment failed” plus a laughing GIF is how you lose a customer.
- Every single section. One GIF is a joke. Twelve is a seizure warning. Keep it special.
How it works
Three steps. Zero pronunciation required.
1
Install it
Upload the zip and activate it, then paste your free GIPHY API key into the settings. Takes less time than arguing about how to pronounce it.
2
Add the GIF module
Open the Divi 5 Visual Builder and drop in the GIF module like any other module.
3
Search, click, done
Type a word, pick a GIF, set size, alignment and alt text. Save it to your Media Library so it keeps working forever.
The settings
Three switches. All of them sensible.
On by default
Enable GIF module
One switch turns GIFs off site-wide, for when the CEO visits. Existing GIF modules quietly show nothing, no errors, and come back when you flip it on.
On by default
Respect reduced motion
Visitors who turned on “reduce motion” get a calm still frame at the same size. Nothing jumps, nothing shifts, nobody gets queasy.
On by default
Lazy-load GIFs
GIFs load as people scroll to them, so your page opens fast and the party starts on arrival.
No tracking. Nothing sent to SU Web Agency. Ever. We genuinely don't want to know what GIFs you pick.
Is it really free?
Yes. No license key, no trial, no “free*”. Checkout costs $0.00 and asks for no card.
So how do you pronounce GIF?
Steve Wilhite, who invented the format, said it's pronounced “JIF”. Plenty of people still say “GIF” anyway. The plugin works either way. We checked.
Does it track my visitors?
No. No tracking, and nothing is sent to SU Web Agency. Save GIFs to your Media Library and visitors never connect to GIPHY at all.
Do I need anything from GIPHY?
A free GIPHY API key, used only when an editor searches in the builder.
What do I need to run it?
WordPress 6.4+, PHP 7.4+ and Divi 5.
Can I add alt text?
Yes, every GIF module has an alt text field. Describe the vibe: “Dog in sunglasses, approving.”
What if my client hates GIFs?
Flip “Enable GIF module” off. Every GIF disappears site-wide without breaking a thing. Flip it back when they've had coffee.
Liked free? You'll love “a lot for less.”
Divi GIF is free forever. If you want your Grok Bot building, moving and rebranding Divi sites too, the SUWEB Bundle gets you Bridge, Kickstart, Box & Ship and Brand Swap from $149/year.
